Family Restaurants in Saigon: Grandparents, Parents, Kids
Round or long table, soft dishes for older guests, mild dishes for children, high chairs, quiet hours, parking. Booking for 6 to 12, with a sample menu.

A restaurant that works for three generations is one where the whole family sits at one table, the oldest person can hear the youngest, children have a seat and something that is not spicy, and nobody waits fifteen minutes longer than the others for their food. That sounds simple. Booking for 6 to 12 people turns each point into a specific question. I am Thịnh, the reservations manager at Bếp Rơm, and this is the list of questions I hear most, with how we answer them. It does not compare us with any other restaurant.
First question: round table or long table
For a family with an older relative, a round table usually works better. At a round table of 8 everyone sees every face and can reach the shared dishes; at a long table the people at the two ends mostly talk to their neighbours. An invented example: Hân’s mother is turning 70, and what Hân says about the party is “The whole family sat at one table. My mother did not have to lean over to hear the grandchildren.” (The full example is below.)
Seating at Bếp Rơm by party size:
| Guests | Seating | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | Table for 4 in the main room, or the covered veranda (8 tables of 4, facing the yard) | 90 minutes |
| 5 to 7 | Round table for eight | 90 minutes for 5, 120 for 6 to 7 |
| 8 | Round table, or the private room if you ask | 120 minutes (private room 180) |
| 9 to 14 | Private room, 12 seats, 14 with extra chairs | 180 minutes, one shared table |
| 15 to 40 | Whole veranda and yard | By phone only |
The main room has 3 round tables of 8. In all we seat 100: main room 48, covered veranda 32, fire counter 8, private room 12. The fire counter is a row of 8 seats facing the grill, for parties up to 4 and 75 minutes; it suits watching the fire more than seating a whole family together.
For more than 8, pick the private room: one table for everyone, nothing pushed together. The room’s rules and minimum spend are in the private room piece.
High chairs, strollers and small things
We have 4 high chairs; tell us when you book and we set them aside. Strollers are kept at the entrance. Four is a limit, so a party with two babies should say so early.
On parking: we are in an alley near Tân Định market (41/7 Nguyễn Hữu Cầu, Tân Định ward, old District 1; the address is made up for this demo site). We list no parking in our booking information, so if you come by car with an older relative, call 0963 929 241 first and ask where to stop and how to get in. I would rather not promise something I cannot keep.
A birthday cake can come in; we cut and serve it free. Outside drinks are not allowed.
Dishes for each person at the table
What makes a three-generation meal hard is how differently people eat at one table: the grandparent wants nothing tough or hot, the 5-year-old will not eat chilli, the parents want something with some weight. We cook one pot of soup, one pot of braise and one grill, so the dishes divide easily. These are what I suggest most when ordering for a table with older guests and children. Prices include 8% VAT; spice is on a 0 to 3 scale.
| Dish | Price | Spice | Allergens (the nine groups) | Why consider it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canh khổ qua nhồi thịt (stuffed bitter melon soup) | VND 98,000 | 0 | fish | Simmered in bone broth, soft, mild broth |
| Thịt heo kho nước dừa (pork belly braised in fresh coconut water, with egg) | VND 148,000 | 0 | egg, fish | Eaten with rice, tender, not spicy |
| Đậu hũ non sốt cà chua (soft tofu in tomato sauce) | VND 78,000 | 0 | soy | Vegan, soft; works for a vegetarian relative |
| Canh chua cá lóc (sour soup with snakehead) | VND 158,000 | 1 | fish | Mild heat; ask us to leave the chilli out |
| Cá lóc kho tộ (clay-pot braised snakehead) | VND 178,000 | 1 | fish | Clay-pot braise, one slice of chilli, removable |
| Bánh xèo tôm thịt (sizzling rice-flour pancake with prawn and pork) | VND 138,000 | 0 | crustaceans, fish | One large pancake, wrapped in herbs for the table |
| Bò nướng lá lốt (beef in betel leaf) | VND 158,000 | 0 | fish | Six rolls, not spicy |
| Sườn heo nướng mật ong (honey-grilled pork chop) | VND 228,000 | 0 | soy, sesame | About 500 g of pork chop |
| Chè bắp nước cốt dừa (sweet corn in coconut cream) | VND 48,000 | 0 | none listed in the nine groups | Vegan, a sweet end to the meal |
Two things to say plainly. First, “soft” in the last column describes the cooking, not a promise about every piece; an older guest with weak teeth should tell us when ordering so the kitchen can choose the right portions. Second, the nine-group table does not sort dishes into “fine” and “not fine” for people with allergies. It only says what a dish contains among the nine groups the kitchen tracks, and the kitchen is shared, so we cannot promise there are no traces. A family with an allergic member should use the allergen filter and tell us at booking.
Our spicier dishes, such as gà ta nướng muối ớt (free-range chicken grilled with chilli salt, VND 268,000, level 2), can still be ordered for a table with children: every dish except lẩu mắm can be made milder or served with the chilli on the side. Lẩu mắm (fermented-fish hotpot, VND 458,000, level 2) cannot be changed because the chilli is in the broth, so for a table with small children or anyone avoiding heat, choose something else. How each spice level should be read is in the spice scale piece and on the spicy dishes page.
Order a mâm so you do not over-order
One reason three-generation meals cost more and end with food left over is that everyone orders a separate dish. A mâm is a set of dishes laid for the whole table, priced at the sum of the single prices minus 5%. The family mâm for 4 is VND 890,000 (VND 222,500 a head): lotus stem salad with prawn and pork, cá lóc nướng trui (snakehead grilled whole in burning straw), pork braised in coconut water, sour snakehead soup, stir-fried water spinach with garlic, and 4 bowls of rice. The round mâm for 6 is VND 1,290,000 (VND 215,000 a head). How the grill, braise and soup fit together is in the piece on a Southern meal, and every dish is listed on the set menus page.
A sample menu for a table of 8, three generations: one round mâm (for 6, VND 1,290,000), one pair mâm (for 2, VND 440,000), and one stuffed bitter melon soup for the older guests (VND 98,000). That is VND 1,828,000, about VND 228,500 a head, drinks not included. With 8 guests there is a deposit of 8 × VND 100,000 = VND 800,000, taken off the bill, leaving VND 1,028,000 to pay. Note that the pair mâm contains the chilli-salt chicken at level 2; ask us to lower the heat when you order.
Drinks are extra: coconut water VND 55,000, roasted brown-rice tea (hot or iced) VND 38,000.
Quiet hours and busy hours
This part is what we have seen at the restaurant, not market data. Weekday lunch and the start of dinner, from 17:00 to about 18:00, tend to be quieter; Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings are busier, especially with birthday parties. With older relatives or small children, a quiet hour means dishes arrive evenly and the room is less noisy.
Things to remember: the kitchen stops from 14:30 to 16:30 (drinks and desserts only), last order is 21:15, and we are closed on Mondays. You can book up to 60 days ahead.
Booking for 6 to 12
The short version: 6 to 7 guests book at least 6 hours ahead, no deposit, table held 15 minutes; 8 guests book 24 hours ahead, VND 100,000 a guest, held 20 minutes; 9 to 14 guests book 48 hours ahead, in the private room, with a flat VND 1,500,000 deposit. Details are on the reservation policy page and in booking a Vietnamese restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City.
An invented example: Hân books the private room for 12 on a Saturday evening, three days ahead; her mother is turning 70 and two small grandchildren eat rice and soup. Two round mâm (VND 2,580,000), one lẩu mắm because her mother likes it (VND 458,000), two grilled bananas in coconut cream (VND 116,000), 6 coconut waters (VND 330,000) and 6 roasted brown-rice teas (VND 228,000). The total is VND 3,712,000, above the VND 3,600,000 dinner minimum, about VND 309,000 a head; after the VND 1,500,000 deposit she pays VND 2,212,000. They sit down at 18:30 for a three-hour seating. An illustrative story for this demo site; figures assumed. The fuller plan is in the family birthday piece.
What we do at Bếp Rơm
- Give the party size, date and time in the form; add high chairs, who is vegetarian, who is allergic to what, who eats mild food.
- We confirm by phone or Zalo, usually within 2 hours in opening hours, and repeat back the allergens you listed.
- The whole family sits at one table; above 8 we use the private room rather than pushing tables together.
- Order a mâm for a small table and add single dishes for the person who eats differently. Chef Trần Kim Loan picks the family mâm for each table if you are not sure what to order.
When you have a date and time, book a table.
Updated 5 October 2026. Prices include 8% VAT, valid until 31 December 2026. Busy and quiet hours are our own observation.
